What is an appropriate position following a liver biopsy?

After a liver biopsy, the recommended position is to have the patient lie on their right side. This position helps to apply pressure to the liver area where the biopsy was performed, minimizing the risk of bleeding and supporting the clotting process. The pressure from the patient's own body weight on the puncture site reduces the likelihood of hemorrhage and promotes healing.

In addition, lying on the right side allows for easier access to monitor the liver and surrounding structures while providing comfort to the patient. This positioning is particularly important in the immediate post-procedure period when the risk of complications, such as bleeding, is most significant.

The Trendelenburg position, which involves lying flat with the legs elevated, is not suitable here as it does not provide the necessary pressure on the liver and might complicate monitoring of vital signs. The dorsal recumbent position, where the patient lies on their back, does not provide the required pressure on the liver site and could also lead to increased risk of complications. Lastly, the sitting position is not appropriate because it does not provide the support and pressure needed at the biopsy site, which is critical to prevent bleeding.
